The Engstligenalp is a place that has an incredible amount to offer. Located at around 2,000 meters above sea level, above Adelboden, it forms the largest plateau in Switzerland. While other places in the Bernese Oberland are often heavily frequented, up here you experience, depending on the season, a very unique and fascinating mix of alpine vastness, wonderful panoramas of Adelboden, and a fascinating waterfall, etc. Both in summer and winter, we love being guests here.
To know what matters, we exchanged information directly with the Engstligenalp team and gathered the most important details for your visit

Stress-free arrival and the cable car
Getting to Engstligenalp is straightforward. If you travel by public transport, you go via Frutigen to Adelboden to the Engstligenalp valley station. The team at the ticket counter confirmed with us that dogs ride the cable car for free.
Although the high plateau is very spacious, it is worth starting early in the morning, especially on weekends or during high season, to make the ride in the large cabins relaxed. Cable cars can also get very crowded during the winter season.

Summer on Engstligenalp: Expanse, waterfalls, and cows
In summer, the high plateau transforms into an expansive hiking paradise. If you head towards the imposing Engstligen Falls, you won’t be disappointed. The waterfall is truly breathtaking.
- IMPORTANT REGARDING COWS: When the alpine herders are on the alp with their livestock, a strict leash law applies according to the cable car company. The cows are used to dogs and roam freely on Engstligenalp, but since unpredictable situations can always arise, we usually consciously avoid these peak-season months with our dogs to stay completely relaxed. If you want to visit the waterfall, the trail leads right through a free-roaming herd of cows.
- Infrastructure & Gear: Up top, you will find two Robidog bins for waste disposal. Since the team confirmed there are no special drinking water sources along the trail, you should always carry enough water for your dog. In summer, however, there is a stream that we always use for cooling down and drinking.

Winter Magic: Snowshoeing across the high plateau
In winter, Engstligenalp shows its magical, snowy side. We love being out here with snowshoes and dogs because the expanse of the high plateau in the cold season is simply indescribable. As the team assured us, there are always plenty of dogs on the alp in winter; thanks to the enormous expanse, everything spreads out very well, and the rules basically remain the same as in summer.
- Dog-Friendly Dining: The local restaurants are consistently extremely dog-friendly. A true highlight in winter is the famous igloo restaurant, where you can easily bring your dog inside. Upon request, you even get special mats so your four-legged friend is cozy on the ice and snow.

Spring awakening and autumn: The quiet transition seasons
In exchange with the cable car company, we also learned how the shoulder seasons work:
- Spring: When the snow slowly melts, the cable car remains completely closed for annual maintenance work from May 3 to June 12.
- Autumn: The cable car company informed us that they are recently open for the first time in autumn with limited operations (mostly Wednesday to Sunday). During this “mid-season,” there is extra peace and quiet on the high plateau.

Respecting nature and flora
Whether in summer or winter: A wonderful, typical Swiss flora grows on Engstligenalp. It is very important to us that this wonderful place remains protected. Therefore, please always stay on marked trails, leave no trash behind, and respect the sensitive alpine plant life. That surely goes without saying.
By the way, not even the Engstligenalp team could name one specific “best spot”, and for good reason: The alp simply has its beautiful side everywhere. So find your own favorite spot. It doesn’t have to be the waterfall; all the routes on the high plateau are truly super manageable and gorgeous.
Mountain Paw Tip:
If you want to avoid the big crowds at the valley station, it’s best to start early in the morning with the first cable car in winter or use the quieter weekdays in autumn. In summer, definitely pack a collapsible bowl and an extra bottle of water for your dog, as there are no public fountains on the high plateau itself—the stream along the way is great for cooling down, but having your own reserve never hurts!
By the way, the forest at the valley station is also well worth a visit. The forest is gorgeous, and you can marvel at the lower waterfall as well.
Conclusion
Engstligenalp is rightly an absolute place of longing for us in the Bernese Oberland. Whether you are trudging through the white high plateau with snowshoes in the deep winter or enjoying the peace and quiet in autumn: The combination of free cable car rides for dogs, the gigantic expanse, and the warm hospitality (including dogs in the igloo!) truly deserves a visit from you. It is so worth it.
