The Wood Carving Trail (Holzskulpturenweg) in Frutigen is far more than a classic hike in the Bernese Oberland. Spanning around ten kilometers, this circular trail combines impressive craftsmanship with the wild beauty of the Engstlige River. Since we live in Frutigen, this route is a regular part of our repertoire, though we use a very specific approach for our four-legged friends.
Hiking between sculptures and waterways
Starting from Frutigen railway station, the path quickly leads into the light Engstlige forest. The best part for dogs: the route runs right along the riverbank. The gravel bed of the Engstlige offers plenty of perfect spots for a welcome cooldown. Because the path lies mostly in the shade of the trees and is often pleasantly quiet, even noise-sensitive dogs will fully enjoy this walk.
The challenge: The Hostalde suspension bridge
A highlight of the tour is undoubtedly the 153-meter-long Hostalde suspension bridge. However, caution is advised here: the bridge features metal grid flooring. For many dogs, like our insecure Domino, this is not only uncomfortable on the paws but also a real mental hurdle. Because of this, we split the route with Domino to avoid the bridge entirely. Delia, on the other hand, can easily be carried across.
Important: Metal grates and bridges can trigger panic in insecure animals!
Mountain-Paw-Tipp:
No need to cross: You don’t necessarily have to cross the bridge to enjoy the trail. Since we live directly in Frutigen, we often walk the route in two separate stages on different days. This allows us to enjoy the sections before and after the bridge without exposing the dogs to the stress of the metal grate. If you want to do the full circular trail, your dog needs to be confident and brave on heights, or you must be prepared to carry your pet (if it’s a smaller dog). However, panic while in your arms can become dangerous here!
- Post-Tour Tick Check: When you are out with your dog in the Engstlige forest, a thorough tick check after the hike is an absolute must. Due to the humidity near the river and the tall grass along some sections, the tick population here is often very high. Effective preventative protection and a post-hike scan are mandatory on this route.
- Wildlife Protection Rules: As the tour passes through marked wildlife protection areas, the clear Bernese regulations apply: a strict leash law is enforced in these zones. This not only protects the local wildlife but also ensures a relaxed experience for everyone on the paths.

A diverse path for explorers. The Wood Carving Trail is an ideal route for warm days, as the forest and the Engstlige River provide plenty of cooling. We also enjoy it during the winter. For dog owners, the tour is technically straightforward—provided you either give the Hostalde suspension bridge a wide berth due to the metal grates or split the hike into two separate stages. There are many ticks along the route, so please check your dog thoroughly afterward.
