Relaxed travel up the mountain in the large gondola
Getting to the Lötschental is uncomplicated. If you travel by public transport, you go via Goppenstein into the valley and take the post bus to Wiler to the Lauchernalp valley station. Going up, you and your four-legged friend will ride in a large 100-person gondola (maximum 80 people permitted), which makes the ride very spacious. If you want to avoid the large crowds at the cable car in the morning, do it like the locals: If you stay overnight directly up on Lauchernalp, you can enjoy the high-altitude trail early in the morning before the first cable car (at 08:25 AM) brings up the day visitors.

The Lauchernalp high-altitude trail: A dream for humans and dogs
The absolute classic is the Lötschental High-Altitude Trail from Lauchernalp to Fafleralp. If you visit in autumn (ideally towards the end of October), the larch trees glow golden and the mountain air is wonderfully crisp. Unlike many other narrow mountain paths, you do not have to worry about tricky passages with loose slate here: The high-altitude trail is consistently very easy to walk and relatively wide for alpine standards.
- On-the-Way Refreshment: A huge plus for dog owners are the numerous bisses and fountains along the path, which are ideal for your dog to drink along the way.
- Dining & Hospitality: The dining options at the mountain station and along the way (such as the Bergrestaurant Tellialp) are exceptionally dog-friendly. All establishments feature great terraces where four-legged friends are warmly welcomed.

Fafleralp and the situation following the Blatten incident
Since the events around Blatten, according to the Tourist Information, visitor numbers are not yet exactly as high as they used to be, but the region is exceptionally well connected again thanks to the new hiking bus (www.loetschental.ch/wanderbus). Please definitely support the region. Fafleralp is magical, especially in autumn!
Important to know for your planning: The hiking bus requires advance reservation, and you must book a spot in the bus for your dog in advance as well. The bus to Fafleralp runs until 1 November 2026.

Mountain Paw Tip
If you want to enjoy the high-altitude trail in absolute peace, either start directly from accommodation on Lauchernalp in the early morning before the first cable car, or choose quieter weekdays. Despite the fountains and bisses along the path, always pack a backup bowl and note the mandatory advance reservation for the hiking bus to Fafleralp, including a ticket for your dog! The bus to Fafleralp runs until 1 November 2026.
Conclusion: Why the Lötschental Is Worth It
The Lötschental offers you and your dog a reliable combination of wide, safe paths, countless streams and fountains, highly welcoming establishments, and a vastness that is hard to find elsewhere. Here you are simply out in nature, make good progress, and have an uncomplicated hiking area for you and your four-legged friend.
