Hiking the Tschentenalp with a dog: Gondola, trails & tips around Adelboden

The Tschentenalp above Adelboden has long been one of our fixed destinations that we keep returning to. Whether hiking in summer or snowshoeing in winter, we’ve been here countless times. And because we know the area so well and have spoken with Tschentenbahnen AG, we know exactly what matters.

Getting there & gondola ride: On the mountain in 7 minutes

The start is relaxed: leave the car down below or take the Postbus directly to the Adelboden Post stop. From there, it’s just a three-minute walk to the valley station.

Especially practical for dogs who don’t like crowded cabins: here you ride in small 3-person gondolas that depart every 15 minutes. Whether you have the cabin entirely to yourselves or stand with others depends heavily on the season and the time of day. The gondolas are rather small. A major plus that was also confirmed to us in our on-site conversation: dogs are transported here free of charge. After just a seven-minute ride, we arrive at the mountain station with a direct view of the mountain world. With such a short ride time, it’s definitely worth a try even for anxious dogs.

Mountain station: Dog-friendly and uncomplicated

What always pleases me here is the mountain restaurant right at the station. Dogs are allowed both indoors and outdoors. This is where we always stop.

As the team at Tschentenbahnen AG confirmed to us, you can leave your water bowl packed in your bag because the staff is happy to bring water bowls right to the table for thirsty dogs. There is also a Robidog station directly at the mountain station, which makes everything completely straightforward.

Our hiking tips starting from Tschentenalp

The great thing here is complete flexibility: whether you want just a very short loop with a beautiful view or a more extensive tour, both are super easy to do. We usually focus on one of these two routes that work reliably in both summer and winter:

  1. The hiking trail toward Schermtanne: A gorgeous route with incredible scenery that is an absolute joy to walk.
  2. The Schwandfeldspitz loop trail: When you want to go a bit higher up and need that full panoramic view.

My tip: Pay attention to your dog’s daily form. Both are simply wonderful.

Why Tschentenalp is always worth it

Tschentenalp remains for us a true positive example of an uncomplicated and short trip with a dog in the Bernese Oberland. Short travel times, free gondola rides in small cabins, and mountain hospitality that you truly appreciate.
