Elsigenalp is a place we have truly taken to our hearts. While other destinations in the Bernese Oberland are often highly frequented, up here you can still experience genuine, unspoiled tranquility. No mass tourism, but plenty of space for you and your dog. Whether a cozy stroll around the beautiful Lake Elsigsee or the more active ascent to the Elsighorn, Elsigenalp offers the perfect adventure for every human-dog team.

Stress-free arrival and the cable car
Getting to Elsigenalp can be planned very flexibly. Those arriving by bus usually start in Frutigen and ride to Achseten, Kirche. From there, a request-a-bus runs to Elsigbach. It is best to reserve this bus the evening before (contact), though we were also able to notify the driver on the first bus and the request-a-bus still arrived on time. The cable car ride from Elsigbach up to Elsigenalp takes a pleasantly short 7 minutes. Even though the alp is rarely crowded, we still recommend starting early in the morning, as the gondola cabins can still get full during peak hours.
If you wish to avoid the cable car ride entirely with an insecure dog, you have a great alternative: you can continue by car or bus up to Höchst (Metsch) and start your hike to Elsigenalp from there (approx. 1 hour).
Lake Elsigsee: The perfect oasis on hot days
When temperatures in the valley rise and you are looking for an easier, relaxed route, Lake Elsigsee is the ideal destination. The trail leading there is flatter, more pleasant to walk, and well suited for older dogs or leisurely walks.
The beauty of Lake Elsigsee lies in its wooded surroundings. Even in high summer, you will find wonderful shady spots under the trees where your dog can rest while the lake itself provides the necessary cooling. By the way, the water level of the lake changes from year to year depending on weather conditions, making it look different with every visit. But watch out: It mostly dries out during July.
An important tip for dogs with a hunting instinct: Elsigenalp is home to many marmots. Keep your eyes open and put your dog on a leash in areas with low visibility if they react to these small alpine residents.
The ascent to the Elsighorn: For active paws
If you are looking for a bit more of an active challenge, choose the trail up to the Elsighorn. This path is significantly steeper and requires a good level of basic fitness, surefootedness, and a physical condition appropriate for your dog’s age and breed.
We needed about 2 hours for the ascent to the summit, including comfortable photo and water breaks. The descent back to the alp is much faster and can be done in about 1 hour. Once at the top, you are rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view that instantly makes you forget the effort.
Mountain Paw Tip:
The perfect route for cable car skeptics
If your dog is highly anxious about cable cars, continue driving towards Höchst (Metsch) to bypass the gondola entirely. If you also avoid the midday peak, you will not only enjoy a relaxed arrival but also benefit from the cows being kept inside the barn. It is already a beautiful place to hike around Metsch, and the walk from there to Elsigenalp takes about an hour.
Dealing with cows in a relaxed way
A big plus for dog owners on Elsigenalp is the situation regarding cows. As officially confirmed to us by the Elsigenalp cable car management upon request, there are no cows in the pastures at all during early summer. Once the alpine summer officially begins, a great system is in place here: the cows spend most of the day inside the protective barn and are only let out in the evenings. This makes hiking during the day incredibly stress-free. You might only run into young cattle occasionally in the higher areas toward the summit, but they are usually very relaxed.
Hospitality and respecting nature
After your hike, the restaurants on the alp invite you to stop by. We have found the dining options here to be exceptionally dog-friendly across the board, with warm and uncomplicated service everywhere. Our personal favorite spot for a break is the Elsighütte, where you can truly feel the genuine hospitality.
Finally, we have a small request that is close to our hearts: a beautiful, typical Swiss flora grows on Elsigenalp. Even though the alp has been spared from mass tourism so far, we want to work together to ensure this untouched nature is preserved. Please make sure to stay on the marked trails, leave no trash behind, and respect the plant life so that this wonderful place remains as peaceful as it is for a long time to come.
