When you go hiking with your dog in the Swiss Alps, you’ll almost always end up using the mountain railways. But how stress-free is the ride really? I checked with four top destinations: Zermatt, the Jungfrau Railways, Ebenalp, and Allmenalp. The results were surprising: the industry is surprisingly dog-friendly and, even more astonishingly, extremely well-prepared for emergencies.

- Zermatt & Jungfrau Railways: Here, dogs travel completely free of charge on almost the entire network. Dogs simply accompany their owners through the entrance gates of the mountain railways.
- Allmenalp: Here, too, transportation is free, and there are no turnstiles, which makes boarding extremely easy.
- Ebenalp: A ticket is required, but dogs in a dog-friendly carrier travel for free. A one-way ticket costs CHF 9, and a round-trip ticket costs CHF 13 for your dog.
Tips for sensitive paws: avoiding grating
Metal grates are a no-go for most dogs. The train operators have recognized this problem and offer customized solutions:
- Allmenalp: The best choice for dogs that prefer solid ground. Here, the entry and exit points are completely paved with concrete.
- Ebenalp: There is an area with grating in the valley, but the railway proactively offers an alternative route without grating.
- Zermatt: Metal grating is used only sporadically in the facilities. In high-traffic areas, Zermatt uses rubber mats to increase slip resistance and comfort.
- Jungfrau Railways: Stations and trains are largely barrier-free and grating-free (low-floor cars).

Emergencies and heat
In German we say “Trust is good, but a protocol is better”. That fits well in this case, because should a cable car come to a standstill, Zermatt and Ebenalp are well prepared: both have special rescue harnesses to safely remove dogs from the cabin in an emergency, even via air rescue. When it comes to heat, all cable cars rely on fresh air through windows, but on extremely hot days, they recommend traveling during the cool morning hours. Jungfrau Railways: Here, the principle of “people with pets” applies. Whenever possible, the pair is evacuated together.

I asked those in charge: How does this trip make things better for everyone? Here are their quotes and advice:
- Ebenalp: “Plan your dog’s trip during off-peak hours, especially if it’s their first time. When the surroundings are quiet, you’ll avoid unnecessary stress caused by large crowds.”
- Jungfrau Railways: “Dogs are not allowed on the seat cushions in trains and gondolas. On trains, use the cars at the very front or very back, where there is usually much more space for four-legged friends. Especially outside of peak hours.”
- Zermatt: “You know your dog best. Mutual consideration ensures that everyone can enjoy the view. If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to use the trains outside of peak hours.”
- Allmenalp: “Our gondolas are very small, holding only 8 people, and the ride is short (7 min.). But since everything is spread out nicely up on Allmenalp, it’s the ideal spot for a stress-free outing with your dog.”
My conclusion: big doesn’t necessarily mean complicated
It’s impressive that major operators like the Jungfrau Railways or Zermatt allow dogs to ride for free. However, if you have a very anxious dog, smaller railways like the Allmenalp often offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere without the stress of turnstiles.

Where can dogs really ride for free?
Unlike the rest of Switzerland, where the fare is often half price, dogs travel for free on almost the entire Jungfrau Railways network. This applies to:
- Interlaken Ost – Lauterbrunnen / Grindelwald (Bernese Oberland Railway)
- Grindelwald Terminal – Eiger Glacier (Eiger Express)
- Wilderswil – Schynige Platte (Cogwheel Railway)
- Interlaken – Harder Kulm (Funicular)
- Lauterbrunnen – Mürren (Aerial Cableway & Adhesion Railway)
The only exception: Jungfraujoch
If you want to go all the way to the top (“Top of Europe”), you’ll have to pay for your dog. From the Eigergletscher station to the Jungfraujoch, the round-trip fare for a dog is a flat rate of CHF 30 (fixed price for the round trip). Important: This ticket is not available online or at ticket machines, but only at the ticket counter.
Viewing platforms & grating
Many of the highlights of the Jungfrau region feature spectacular viewing platforms. Here’s an important distinction for those with sensitive paws:
- Harder Kulm (Two-lake footbridge): A must-see! This is the only platform in the area without a metal grating floor. Here, your dog can relax with you and enjoy the view of Interlaken and the two lakes.
- First Cliff Walk & Schynige Platte Skywalk: These have grating. To be fair, the railway companies recommend not taking your dog onto the platform here. However, the hiking trails around them are all dog-friendly and accessible without grating.
Easy access & comfort
- Trains: Modern railcars feature low-floor entrances (no steep metal stairs). On trains, it’s best to board at the very front or very back—that’s where there’s the most space for dogs.
- Gondolas: The windows on the Eiger Express and the Firstbahn can be opened (tilt windows), though only at the top. So fresh air is guaranteed.
